CHANEL model 0011, color 00 from the very early nineties is, as the code states, a very early low number model made in Italy for CHANEL. These sunglasses are made of a white opaque acetate which is one of the most fragile materials to make sunglasses out of because it reacts to almost any outer temperature and humidity influence as well as perfume, make-up, body oils and any color it comes in close contact to.
It is hard to find a very old pair of CHANEL sunglasses in pristine condition when they have been made of this opaque material, in white. In fact, we see that the model in our sunglassespreservation archives shows a so called “pigmentation” across the acetate which; in this model’s case; results in light grey/beige spots irregularly appearing across the shade’s frames.
The best way to store them is to wrap them into thin white non-chemically treated wrapping paper and then, after making sure no parts of the white acetate are peaking out, placing them in their CHANEL box. Do not place them directly into their designated CHANEL protective box as it tends to transfer the dark color onto the sunglasses.
The frames have a six sided “hexagonal” shape which is reminiscent of a diamond shape. The frame tilts slightly upwards on the outer top right and left sides making these shades very feminine. The temples are also made of opaque white acetate and are screwed to the frame with golden metal screws. Each temple is adorned with one CHANEL double “C” logo as was typical to each pair of shades made in the nineties.
This specific model is one of the oldest CHANEL sunglasses made in white acetate and we are observing the ongoing development of the reaction of this material to further time passing. These shades are from the CHANEL pret-a-porter spring summer 1991 collection.
