BERNHARD WILLHELM for TOPMAN ss08 by LINDA FARROW

Bernhard Willhelm made one collaboration with TOPMAN in summer 2008 when he teamed up with LINDA FARROW to create three different color shades for the British shop label. These sunglasses were made in China and were available in three different colors as part of the TOPMAN designer collaboration collection that summer. The colors available were black, havanna brown semi transluscent and transparent clear. All three were made in plastic.

The particulaity of this model is the way the frame was cut to fit the lenses. It gives the wearer a particularly sad look, almost like a clown would have in the circus. This is Willhelm’s first approach in the direction of clown masks as eyewar, which would culminate a couple of years later in the collaboration with Berlin based MYKITA’s label, when he designed the so called “sad clown” or otherwise called “evil clown” glasses.

The TOPMAN model is fairly simple as it has one frame and two temples with no extra attachments to them. They are oversized and quite heavy to wear. Each one of the three colors fits differently on the wearer as the color changes the entire appearance of this model. The clear transparent model is the rarest of the three colors.

Bernhard Willhelm stopped designing with LINDA FARROW end of 2008 and moved on to collaborate with MYKITA but some of his models designed with LINDA FARROW until 2008 can still be found on sale on the LINDA FARROW website.
